Do we really need a Space Corps ?

Image

CAPITOL HILL: The nation does not need a new armed service specializing in space, the leaders of the Air Force said today in rejecting a House Armed Services Committee plan. In fact, they said, carving a “Space Corps” out of the Air Force — which handles most space missions today — would only make it harder to integrate space operations with warfare in the air, cyberspace, land, and sea.

“The Pentagon is complicated enough,” Air Force Secretary Heather Wilson told reporters. “This will make it more complex, add more boxes to the organization chart, and cost more money. And if I had more money, I would put it into lethality, not bureaucracy….I don’t need another chief of staff and another six deputy chiefs of staff.”

The brainchild of Strategic Forces Subcommittee chairman Mike Rogers, the HASC proposal would create the Space Corps as its own service with its own Chief of Staff sitting on the Joint Chiefs. The new Space Corps would be a separate uniformed service from the Air Force but would report to the civilian Air Force Secretary, who would oversee both Air Force and Space Corps acquisition. That’s similar to the longstanding arrangement whereby the Marine Corps is a separate service from the Navy but reports to the Navy Secretary. The Navy-Marine model proves such arrangements can work — but then the sea services have had since 1798 to work out the many bugs.

“We need to simplify, not make it more complicated and bureaucratic,” Wilson summed up.

I wonder if a similar argument was made by the Secretary of the Army when the Air Force was created out of the Army Air Force?

We all need a “Space Corps”, so when Mars Attacks again we can fight them off like in the movies from the 50's. All those movies were really Documented Governmental Documentaries of the conflict Earth has had in the last 5 millenniums with aliens.

Sustenimus has a valid point.

We are, by Treaty, obligated to the idea of non-militarization of the orbitals. Having a Space Corps, that sits at Joint-Chiefs level, might be emulated by other nations, who might just take it at it's definition, Treaty or not.

It's odd how the existing USAF is so determined to operate fixed-wing aircraft for the Army's necessity, but is also unwilling to maintain a close-air support dedicated force. The Army, when faced with the USAF decision to "retire" the A-10, in favor of a modified F16 that could also "operate as air superiority, offered to take the A10, but the USAF refused. The modified F16 had less loiter time, higher minimum speeds, and it's "danger close" delivery was several multiples that of the A -10.

Funny, but the USAF declines to operate off of carriers, so both the USN, and the USMC have organic fixed-wing elements. Even the USCG operates fixed-wing aircraft. The USAF operates a strategic element of only a couple of hundred craft, and transportation elements as well as fighter aircraft. Seems like a lot of money, organizational boxes, and duplication of effort are afforded the USAF. Instead of a stand-alone service, they could easily be folded back into the Army, and the strategic bombers and missiles could be grouped under a Strategic Services heading in the Army.

Right now, with the non-militarization Treaty, what are they going to need a Space Force for?

It was the army that started the whole rocketry thing in the first place. ;)

Sure was. Most other military organizations regard the missile, rocket, and long-range aircraft as a separate part of the Army, a Corps level system. Think of the money saved by folding the USAF back into the Army.

That's a good idea JR then the troops would have the air cover they need . Besides anybody crazy enough to land an aircraft on a pitching rainy deck in the dark ought to be the ones in space right? , after all it's dark there too !

It's also kind of funny that we have NASA, who is supposed to be in charge of our space effort.

Here, and I thought that they were just another government agency, staffed with empire building bureaucrats. I'm not sure that the CIA would want that, as it would just add more managers. :?:

The truth behind the hype surrounding next week's eclipse?

Yeah, I saw Independence Day and part of Mars Attacks, too. They'll manage to surround themselves... we can shoot any direction and hit something. :)
